This eighty acre estate of the former Howell Nurseries in the rolling landscape of East Tennessee traces back to the 18th century, presumably as the first large corporation in the state. Decades after the late Joe Howell, his whimsical composition of greens, Lavender fields, groves, Lebanon cedars, and juxtaposing constructions from local stone fell abandoned, forms the base for turning this landmark's bucolic setting into a grand garden. These new interpretations are inspired by Hansjörg Göritz' impressions of picturesque English landscape gardens while a student in London. An ideal composition of historic landscape and architecture structures, complemented by new cedar alleys, pavilions, studio towers, a stoa, carillon, theater, open air theater, and belvedere on the heights of the lawn form a timeless Gesamtkunstwerk, with Appalachia's ridges and foothills as its vistas.
